We have been doing a small bit of travel in the name of triathlons. We have been to St. George twice already for me to compete in triathlons and had a blast. The first one was the SHAC (Sand Hollow Aquatic Center) which is a smaller triathlon to get tuned up for the rest of the season. It was fun and the kids enjoyed staying in a motel and spending time with their cousins.
Triathlons have become a pretty big deal for me. My brother, Jeff, sister Julie, and my nephew Cody have been participating in them since last spring. For me, it was a great way to drop my weight (from 280 pounds to 200 pounds!) and also feed my competitive spirit. I spent a good portion of this past winter training for this season and it has paid off. Now, we have Russ training for a triathlon as well as several of the nieces of nephews. Connor has shown some interest but nothing long term. I keep trying to Jessica to compete as well but the drive just isn't there. It's almost like they are teenagers or something.
I did another triathlon in St. George as well called (get this) the St. George Triathlon. It is probably the biggest tri in the state and there were a lot of people racing. That happened of May 10th. We met my brothers in the campground at Sand Hollow Reservoir and camped Friday night so we wouldn't have to travel to the event Saturday morning. Last October we had a triathlon here but it was cancelled due to the bad weather so we were hoping for a beautiful morning so we could race. Alas, the wind had kicked up during the night and in the end they cancelled the swim portion of the race because of how rough the water was. We did get to bike and run, though, and that was almost as much fun. About 2/3 the fun, actually. I did very well on the bike and did moderately well on the run. I placed 198th out of 909 people so that wasn't too bad.
Now, we are getting ready for the Salem triathlon (June 7), the Utah Summer Games triathlon (June 14), and the Provo triathlon (June 21). Then there will be a break until September. Russ, Jeff, and Julie (and their families) will all be up here for the Salem triathlon and then my mom and dad (and everyone else) will be up here for the Provo triathlon. So, it is also providing a great excuse for all of us to get together and for cousins to hang out.
I will post again after the tris and get some pictures up (and maybe even video) of the events. Until then, ta ta!
